Tamamushi-Nuri Lacquerware Plate

Updated at 2026-04-13

Tamamushi-nuri originated in Sendai City. By sprinkling silver powder onto the surface and applying layers of lacquer mixed with pigments, artisans create a uniquely iridescent finish. As the angle of light changes, the surface reflects shifting colors reminiscent of the wings of the jewel beetle (tamamushi), from which the technique takes its name. Designated as a traditional craft of Miyagi Prefecture in 1985, this plate features a maki-e design of Miyaginohagi (Thunberg's lespedeza), the prefectural flower of Miyagi.
