Tsuishitsu is a traditional lacquer-processing technique. The necklace in the picture is a product of this technique. A blank is not required when applying tsuishitsu. Rather, thick, natural lacquer is applied layer upon layer to create the workpiece. The previous layer of lacquer must be completely dry before the next layer can be applied. Therefore, making the crude workpieces takes months. Tsuishitsu lacquerware can either be engraved or not. Engraved and non-engraved finished products are largely similar in elegance, texture, and aesthetics.
