Sendai Tsuishu is a carved-lacquer craft prized in the Sendai region. Its intricate incised designs, in vivid contrasts of red and black, express a distinctly East Asian aesthetic, while the lacquer itself is durable, heat-resistant, and waterproof. The technique was popularized in the early 20th century by Murakami-Tsuishu craftsman Kawasaki Einojo from Niigata Prefecture. Unlike other carved-lacquer traditions, Sendai Tsuishu uses a molded wood-powder base, allowing for more efficient production and wider accessibility, making it a craft embraced by the general public.
