Dondoro was created by Ito artist Kazuo Okubo in 1950. The name means "from the cradle to the grave" and signifies that life eventually returns to the earth. The creepy-looking figurine is actually a talisman to ward off evil spirits, and its large mouth and red tongue can swallow the evil of the world. It was extremely popular among residents and tourists at the time. The Dondoro figurine was discontinued for a time. It became an instant hit after it was relaunched.
