Newark is a hub city for sea and air transportation. The Newark Liberty International Airport was the first international airport in the Greater New York area. The Port Newark–Elizabeth Marine Terminal is one of the busiest marine terminals in the United States in terms of cargo throughput. Due to similar industrial backgrounds, Taoyuan City and Newark City became sister cities in 2021, becoming Taoyuan's first sister city on the east coast of the United States.
