The Columbia River flows through Washington State and has been the main route for local water transportation since ancient times. The river interconnects many native tribes and provides the tribes with their main source of nutrition - salmon. The painting depicts a canoe on the Columbia River. Although different boats are used today, traveling on the Columbia River remains a popular tourist experience in Washington.
