During the Edo period, sendai-hira was the highest-quality silk fabric offered to the imperial family and shogunate as tribute. Today, it is designated as an important intangible cultural property of Japan. When novelist Yasunari Kawabata received the Nobel Prize in Literature and figure skater Yuzuru Hanyu was awarded the People's Honor Award, both wore sendai-hira to express their affection and reverence for the craft. Sendai-hira emphasizes using the densest raw silk and the most refined natural dyes, all processed by hand. Not only is it visually and tactilely elegant, but it is also durable and wrinkle-resistant, making it an excellent heirloom to be passed down for generations without deterioration.
