Japanese Millet Puppet

Updated at 2024-04-26

1940

Barley and millet were the main grains eaten by the common folk in Japan in the Edo period. Similar to rice, millet needs to be deshelled and dried before cooking. The doll in the picture is wearing a kimono and pounding with a pestle. Japan has the most vivid doll culture globally, and Japanese doll-making is highly demanding in skill and craftsmanship. Not only do artisans need the carving skills to create exquisite facial expressions, but they also need tailoring skills to sew the patchwork of fabric onto the puppet's body.
