Although shippo-yaki has been called "Japanese cloisonné" by some, shippo-yaki styles and techniques have been passed down for centuries and evolved into a style very different from Chinese cloisonné. The main differences are that Chinese cloisonné is made from opaque enamel, while shippo-yaki is created using transparent enamel, creating transparent and reflective enamelware. Moreover, coloring is embedded beneath the glass, producing brighter and more vivid colors. Shippo-yaki is generally decorated with neat and elegant patterns. Currently, shippo-yaki is produced throughout Japan. However, Kyoto shippo-yaki is arguably the most famous.
