Dating back over 800 years to the Kamakura period (1185–1333), Kawatsura lacquerware originated in what is now Kawatura-cho, Yuzawa City. It began when Lord Michinori Onodera encouraged local farmers to take up lacquering weapons as a secondary trade. Known for its affordability and durability, Kawatsura lacquerware is widely used for everyday utensils such as bowls, plates, and tray.
