The tenugui comes in a variety of designs. In early times, tenugui served a practical purpose, similar to that of a hand towel or handkerchief. Today, tenuguis are no longer an essential item, yet they remain extremely popular for their elegant tie-died or printed patterns. They are now used as covering against the sun, bags, headbands, and even curtains. The tenugui in the picture was specially made to commemorate the friendship between Taoyuan and Narita. It is placed in a frame to be hung up as a unique work of art.
