Southern California has the largest Asian population in the United States. With the boom in Asian-run hotels near Los Angeles in 1974, several dozen Taiwanese merchants relocated to Southern California and established the first commercial association in the United States. Nearly half a century later, the Taiwan Hotel and Motel Association of Southern California has overcome economic volatility. It remains the foremost institute fighting for Asian rights in the United States. The flag in the picture was gifted to Mayor Wen-tsan Cheng during a visit to the United States in 2019.
