The rug in the picture features the Texas flag. Texas was once part of Mexico. The Republic of Texas was established after the declaration of independence. The flag has a single yellow star on a blue background. Therefore, Texas was often referred to as the Lone Star Republic. The Republic of Texas joined the United States in 1845, becoming the 28th state. The flag was redesigned to resemble the American flag by placing the original Republic of Texas flag at the top left of a red and white base. Because Texas joined the Confederacy as an independent nation, it is the only state that can fly its flag at the same height as the U.S. flag.
