Guam is closer to Taiwan and the Philippines than the continental United States. However, the island is small, and its topography is predominantly limestone highlands, making it difficult to grow food. Therefore, the island relies heavily on imported goods, resulting in prices that are 30% higher than that of the continental United States. Nevertheless, the tuition of the University of Guam is relatively affordable, roughly half the average college tuition of the continental United, allowing local students to pursue higher education without the burden of heavy student loan debt. Printed on the t-shirt is “University of Guam” in both English and Chamorro, the language spoken by the local indigenous population.
