Before 1848, New Mexico was actually a territory of Mexico, which was not ceded to the United States until the Mexican-American War. It was officially established as a state in 1912. For this reason, New Mexico is the only state in the United States with two official languages. Human activity in New Mexico can be traced back to before the common era. The rich Spanish and Native American cultures also paint New Mexico with strong cultural qualities.
