The container in the picture that looks suspiciously like a wooden box is actually a cup specifically for drinking sake! The ritual of drinking sake from a "masu cup" is a unique process in its own right. First, a shot glass is placed in the center of the masu. Sake is poured into the glass until it overflows into the masu. This custom exists because, in ancient times, only wealthy families could afford to drink sake, so pouring sake generously symbolized abundance and wealth. Traditionally, the masu is only used on major holidays and special occasions to add a woody aroma to the drink.
