The original portrait was created by renowned ukiyo-e painter Kunimasa Utagawa in the late Edo period. The portrait was of Danjuro Ichikawa, the most famous performer in the Kabuki Juhachiban. The composition of the portrait is extremely compelling. Kunimasa Utagawa was originally a dyer. He became a painter while pursuing his passion for painting kabukis and their performers. Ukiyo-e was a popular art form in the Edo period, and it was used to record the daily lives of the common folk in Japan.
