In Japanese mythology, Ebisu is a sea god and is worshipped as a patron saint by fisherpeople. With the advent of the age of exploration, shipping became a lucrative enterprise. Ebisu's scope of influence gradually expanded to include sea trade. The people even established a festival between January 9 and January 11 in its honor. Ebisu wields a fishing rod in its right hand and holds a snapper in its left.
