Lion dances are a common performance in Asia. Taiwan's lion dance is very different from that of Japan in style and choreography. In the northeastern part of Japan, the lion head is seen as the incarnation of deities. Therefore, lion dance is sometimes referred to as incarnation dance, or gongenmai. During the New Year, the lion dance of the Yamabushi Kagura is performed at the doorsteps of every household, allowing people to kneel in worship outside their homes. Two performers usually perform the lion dance. In some cases, there will be additional performers playing deer, boar, or mice.
