Yamanaka is the birthplace of Yamanaka lacquerware. Originally, Yamanaka lacquerware was marketed as souvenirs to onsen-goers. As more artisans took up residence in Yamanaka, Yamanaka lacquerware and its 400 years of heritage gradually popularized in the craft sector. The most breathtaking aspects of Yamanaka lacquerware are the thousands of strands etched onto the surface of the wood and the maki-e process of adding gold and silver powder. Yamanaka lacquerware continues to steal the show at various exhibitions.
