The red and white stripes on the paperweight coincide with the color scheme of the Brno city flag. The colors red and white hold great significance to the Czech people. As early as the Middle Ages, the arms of the Kingdom of Bohemia featured a silver double-tailed lion on a red shield. After World War I, the Czechs, Slovaks, and Rusyns came together to form the independent state of Czechoslovak and adopted the white-over-red flag. Later, blue was incorporated into the flag to represent the Slovaks and Rusyns and to distinguish it from the almost-identical Polish flag.
