Although Australia's history dates back only a little over a hundred years, its indigenous cultures can be traced back 50,000 years, making some of them the oldest surviving cultures known to man. The Australian indigenous bookmarks are marked with totems greatly valued by the indigenous people. They are used on important occasions, such as in ceremonies and funerals, and they are also carved into tree bark. Different families have different totems, and they are passed down from generation to generation. Most totems depict endemic animals, such as crocodiles, rainbow snakes, honey bees, and kangaroos, and portray the unique worldview of the indigenous people.
