Have you ever been welcomed with a wreath of frangipanis on your island vacation? The scientific name for frangipanis is Plumeria. It is the national flower of Kiribati, an island nation at the center of the Pacific Ocean. In fact, the flower embroidered on this fan is a frangipani. The tropical islands of Kiribati are no less beautiful than the Maldives. However, far fewer tourists visit the island nation because of the sheer distance. The closest continent to Kiribati is Australia. Even so, it is still 4,300 kilometers away. Therefore, Kiribati has been coined "the end of the world" or "the place the world forgot." Sea levels have constantly risen in recent years due to global warming. Kiribati became the first country to lose land from global warming. These challenges add to the isolation and mystery of the island nation.
