The jeepney is a popular means of public transport in the Philippines. The earliest jeepneys were modified U.S. military jeeps left behind after World War II. The word “jeepney” is a portmanteau of “jeep” and “jitney,” which means “shared taxi.” Jeepney owners can modify the vehicles however they want, so jeepneys have become mobile works of art. They are often painted in bright colors with lively motifs, and design inspirations include graffiti, popular culture, and religion. Owners decorate them according to their own preferences, and some also play popular music while driving. All these are why the jeepney has become a leading symbol of the Philippine culture and art. The most common type of public transport in the Philippines is also an emblem of culture and art.
