Yuzen is the generalized term for the technique used to dye kimonos and other products. Its processes include drawing, pasting, dying, and steaming. Kaga yuzen and Kyo yuzen are the two most well-known in Japan. The features of Kaga yuzen are bright, vivid colors and natural patterns created through smudging. Kaga yuzen is applied to kimonos and used to dye handkerchiefs, scarves, and ties. The tie in the picture was died using Kaga yuzen. Today, this dying technique is recognized as a traditional craft in Japan.
